The Portugieser debuted in 1939. Like the watchmakers in Schaffhausen, IWC put a slightly modified hand-wound Calibre 74 pocket watch movement into a 41.5mm case, put a leather strap on it, and the Portuguese was born. It was not until 1998 that the Cheap IWC Portugieser Chronograph Replica appeared. The current model still looks like the one from 23 years ago and has proven to be the hallmark of the modern brand. The first Portuguese watch was model 325. It’s a watch with a surprisingly large case — we’re talking 1939, when 35mm was considered a large watch — and it’s hardly a bestseller.

A version with a 7-day in-house movement was introduced after 1998, becoming the poster boy of the collection. But regardless of the internal-driven competition, the chronograph will keep going. The good news is that even in more complex versions like annual and perpetual calendars, it still looks important.

It still technically dates back to the 7750, but the new movement is definitely an upgrade on its column wheel design. The IW3714 has always concealed its non-manufactured movement behind sold watches, while the new 1:1 replica watches proudly displays its new automatic movement.

The 41 × 13 mm strap comes with a steel bracelet, but recently a steel bracelet is also available. That bracelet looks surprisingly good, and probably has more fans than a traditional leather strap.
